Making employee relations beautiful for The Body Shop

The Body Shop’s International Reward and Employee Engagement Director, Jeremy Hinds commissioned me to bring to life several company-wide communications.

Ranging from short films, presentations and posters, this output was considered very successful and I still have a great working relationship with Jeremy today.

Character-based films 'Disengaged Bob' and 'Engaged Bob' were very well-received and our 'Nip it in the bud' (featuring 'Doris') short film that covered colleague disagreements — saved the international business thousands in unnecessary conflict resolution costs.

At the time, employee engagement films tended to be quite dry. Jeremy and I took a different approach with The Body Shop animations — we designed them as if they were meant for external audiences, as well as internal. While the content was strictly internal due to its private nature, this approach kept employees engaged, sparked meaningful conversations, and inspired positive change throughout the business.

We steered clear of corporate jargon, opting instead for a tone that felt natural and easy for staff to connect with. The way you communicate with people matters — the tone you use, the manner in which you speak. This holds true for visual communication as well. Regardless of the audience's varying levels of experience with the subjects explored in the films or books, I never talk down to them and always assume the best of everyone.

Please note: When I edit these showreel examples I obviously highlight my own art direction, animation and motion design contributions but that certainly doesn't mean that I am entirely responsible for every visual shown. I have been fortunate to collaborate with many exceptionally talented colleagues — those that I can recall at the time of writing are listed below:
