Engineering elegant design solutions for Arup

Arup is a collective of architects, engineers, designers, consultants and experts, working across 140 countries, based in London, with headquarters directly under the BT Tower.

I worked with their media team over several years to produce a variety of films, animations for their design yearbook, as well as developing a responsive HTML5 video library system for their intranet/extranet.

It was during this time working with Arup that I transferred my software focus from Macromedia Flash projects to solely using After Effects.

Arup's Head of Communications, Ben Richardson, was an excellent guide through the learning curve of some of the more technical aspects in the process of filmmaking and editing, as was his assistant, Piers Dennis, both of whom are now successful independent film directors.

Role Art Director / Animation

Please note: When I edit these showreel examples I obviously highlight my own art direction, animation and motion design contributions but that certainly doesn't mean that I am entirely responsible for every visual shown. I have been fortunate to collaborate with many exceptionally talented colleagues — those that I can recall at the time of writing are listed below:

Piers Dennis — Director
R M Morris — Musician

Working with Andrew was – and is – a real joy. A design expert and multimedia guru, he played a key role in helping us to showcase our work in really lovely ways. He’s a rare talent, and it was a real pleasure to work with him

Arup - Video Library - Application

Arup's media department required their existing HTML and Flash video library presentation for their intranet and website updating.

They required the interface to work cross-platform including the latest Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari browsers as well as the IPhone and iPad. We designed and produced a HTML5 and XML based solution that worked seemlessly across all of these formats including both portrait and landscape views on the iPad.
