Making the complex beautifully simple

I have worked with The Guardian since 2021, originally providing design and animation support to their Media team as they produced six short films to expand on recent Guardian exclusives (of which 'Fukushima', 'Tax havens' and 'Weather apps' are featured below).

Following this I was commissioned for a variety of design tasks in various departments: reviewing the Guardian YouTube channel graphics, designing layouts and infographics for social media, implementing Google Web Stories and perhaps most notably, providing animation and motion graphic assets for Guardian Australia's 2022 General Election coverage.

At this point, I was then introduced to the (Oscar and Bafta-winning) 'Special Projects' team and since then my main contribution has been providing art direction and animations for their film and documentary output.

Andrew brings hard work, creative energy and skill to deliver really beautiful and compelling films

Fukushima
— September 16th, 2021
How Japan is dumping 1m tonnes of radioactive water in the ocean

'Since the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster, more than 1m tonnes of radioactive water has been building up at the power plant in central Japan. Soon the plant will run out of space to store the water, which is a big problem. The plan at the moment is to dump it all in the sea. So how do you go about making 1m tonnes of radioactive water, safe to drink?'

Tax havens
— October 28th, 2021
How Britain is responsible for a third of the world's lost taxes

'Tax havens cost governments at least $245bn a year in lost revenue – and many of these havens are British. In fact, the country is leading the world in hiding legitimate money and laundering dirty cash. So how did we get here, and how has Britain managed to preside over a third of the world's lost taxes?'

Weather apps
— November 18th, 2021
Why are all my weather apps different?

'Predicting what is going on with the weather is important. It impacts every aspect of our life: from deciding what to wear and when we go outside to predicting natural disasters and managing a public health crisis. In this digital age, we have a vast array of different apps that can predict the weather to a decent level of accuracy. But there is a frustrating anomaly with weather apps: often they cannot seem to agree. Josh Toussaint-Strauss explores why there are regular discrepancies between weather apps and how to get the best out of them.'
